The William Newman Department of Real Estate at the Zicklin School of Business is a center of excellence in producing and disseminating cutting edge real estate knowledge.

This department is renowned for its dynamic courses and insight into current trends.  The curriculum covers all aspects of real estate and prepares students to excel in the real estate industry.

The program also includes many scholarship opportunities for students. The Advisory Board Speaker Series, Mentoring Programs, the Real Estate Club, career panels and other career-related events offer unparalleled opportunities for students to be in close contact and to network with industry leaders.

Mission Statement

The William Newman Department of Real Estate seeks to recruit talented and motivated students who are interested in understanding the economic and behavioral aspects of real estate markets. Our missions are to create cutting-edge real estate related knowledge and to produce future leaders in the real estate and related fields. To achieve these goals, the Department recruits faculty members with an established record of (or with a great potential to produce) top-notch research and the ability to interact effectively with industry leaders.

Our undergraduate and graduate programs prepare students to enter one of the most exciting and fast growing career fields in the U.S.  Students acquire competent skills to succeed in real estate as well as related industries in the business world.  Given real estate’s pervasive impact on public and business sectors, the study of real estate helps students understand important concepts and issues for making crucial business decisions and creating effective public policies.

About William Newman

Bio of William Newman (’47, LLD [Hon.] ’97)

William Newman graduated in 1947 from Baruch College with a BBA and received an honorary doctorate from the college in 1997. Mr. Newman’s support for Baruch has been extensive and includes funding the Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute, providing key support for the reconstruction of the College’s library, and, in 2005, presenting Baruch with a record-breaking gift of $25 million. A real estate legend, Mr. Newman is the founder and former chairman of New Plan Excel Realty Trust, Inc., which was recently acquired by Centro Properties Group for $6.2 billion.

Marking his prominence in the real estate industry, William Newman has received the Wall Street Transcript’sgold, silver, and bronze medals for national leadership in the real estate industry, and Ernst & Young’s Real Estate Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1998. He is also the former chairman of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, a position he occupied from 1990 to 1992.

Mr. Newman’s long-term support for Baruch College has allowed for the creation of the Newman Real Estate programs at the college, which includes the BBA in Real Estate, MBA in Real Estate, MS in Real Estate, and Ph.D. (in conjunction with the Department of Finance) in Real Estate.

The William and Anita Newman Library was named the best college library in the nation for 2003 by the academic arm of the American Library Association.
